Asaphus kowalewskii is a species of trilobite that lived during the Ordovician period, approximately 470 million years ago. It had a distinctive “eyestalk” that allowed it to see predators and food from a distance. It had a cephalon, or head region, which was oval in shape and had two central raised ridges. Its pygidium, or tail region, was rounded with a pointed tip. Its body was covered in a series of overlapping plates, which served as protection against predators. This specimen is sitting on a perfectly sized piece of matrix to show off all the beautiful characteristics of this trilobite.
