Knightia fish plate fossils are one of the most common fossils found in the Green River Formation in Wyoming. They are the fossilized remains of an extinct species of herring-like fish that lived during the Eocene Epoch about 50 million years ago. Knightia fossils are usually found as a single fish that is about 2-3 cm long and preserved in a flattened, two-dimensional state. This fish specifically is about four and a half inches long. The fossilized fish are often found in a variety of colors, ranging from white to dark brown.
